It's pretty obvious that being denied access to visit a dying gay partner in a hospital because you're not legally family is pretty horrible. Or that while straight couples don't have to pay estate tax for deceased spouses, gay couples usually do.
What gets me on this topic is that people miss the point of why marriage between a man and a woman is legal in the first place; the underlying point is who can legally have children.
Many of the tax breaks marriage gives couples are meant to make raising children more affordable and legally straight forward. Without those breaks, gay couples are hindered in having children.
The main way Gays can have children is adoption, though...gay couples have a hell of a time getting adoption approved. If gay marriage becomes legal it will be much easier for them to actually finish the adoption process. And if a particular agency discriminates against gay couples, they'll be vulnerable in court. Thus a huge reason for conservatives to fight against gay marriage is that they simply believe gay couples would make horrible parents. But don't we all know straight couples that are horrible parents?
Who's to say that gay parents would be any worse. If the argument is that a kid should have both a male and female parent, well...how many kids only have one parent? Oh...only about 20 million. It wasn't included in the source, but maybe most of those single parents are transgender and that makes up for the gender/parent offset. 2 in 1 deal!l
No really, this issue is mainly about who can legally have children. How can a government that's 'pro-civil rights' deny the institution that makes children more feasible for couples?
